THE LOOK
Today, when I reminded Shelly to stop her talking to Jodi and to get down to work, she fired "the look" at me. I ducked and it missed. But it was close. Looks can't kill, but several students in my class have already been injured by Shelly's evil glare. I decided that I had to do something about this classroom hazard. However, disarming Shelly involved considerable personal risk.
For my plan to work - and this was the dangerous part - Shelly needed to display her look again. So I reminded her, once more, to stop talking. Shelly shot me another look. It was quicker and even more evil than the last one, but I moved and looked away. Whew, that was close. Then I said "Shelly, do that again."
She said, "What!?"
I said, "That was a really good look. Give me that look again."
"What look?"
"You know - the evil look you give me and others to really get us."
Shelly blushed. She was embarrassed. She was angry too - a typical time for her to unleash the wrath of "the look" - but she couldn't do it. It was gone. She was disarmed and she knew it. "The look" had been exposed and scrutinized just enough to render it harmless. Other students then asked for Shelly to give them "the look." Some even asked her for the really nasty one. She couldn't do it. Suddenly, a great cheer spread up and down the rows of desks in room 102, and I was hoisted up and carried around the room by the newly freed students.
The principal came in and told the kids to put me down and told us all to settle down. Shelly tried to give him the "the look," But she couldn't fire because she started laughing and we all started laughing. Then the principal gave us a puzzled sort of look and walked out and we all cheered again and carried Shelly around the room. And when all the cheering and carrying died down, Shelly promised never to fire her look in anger and never to point or to walk around with a loaded face ever again.
